Benin’s Opposition Intensifies Efforts as President Talon Dismisses Third-Term Rumors

Benin’s opposition party, Les Démocrates, is intensifying its campaign in the country’s northern region, accusing the government of failing to deliver on key promises.

Meanwhile, President Patrice Talon has dismissed rumors that he is seeking an unconstitutional third term.

Led by former President Thomas Boni Yayi, the opposition is openly challenging the current administration. During a rally in Matéri, party representative Kamel Ouassagari criticized the government’s energy policies.

He rejected the administration’s claims to China of stable electricity supply, blatantly calling it “lies”.

Ouassagari also expressed confidence in his party’s chances in the 2026 presidential elections, stating that candidate from Les Démocrates could emerge the next President in the next 435 days.

His remarks come as President Talon, in an interview with Jeune Afrique, reaffirmed that he will not seek another term.

Les Démocrates also promised economic reforms, particularly for farmers, pledging that they would soon receive fair prices for their crops.
