Burkina Faso’s transitional president has granted amnesty to over twenty soldiers convicted or prosecuted in connection with the September 15-16, 2015 events.
A decree issued on March 24, 2025, states that the pardon extends to disciplinary sanctions, but those reinstated in the military will not be entitled to career reconstruction or compensation.
The decision follows a December 2024 government bill, approved by the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) with 67 out of 70 votes in favor.
The 2015 coup attempt was led by the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP), an elite unit loyal to former President Blaise Compaoré.
They briefly detained transitional leaders Michel Kafando and Isaac Zida before a failed takeover.
The RSP was later dissolved, and coup leader General Gilbert Diendéré was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2019, alongside other convicted officers.
