Court Sentences 22-Year-Old to Death by Hanging for Murder of Prostitute

A High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced a 22-year-old man, Jamiu Malomo, to death by hanging after he was found guilty of stabbing a commercial sex worker to death.

While narrating the circumstances that led to the crime, the prosecuting counsel, A.M Adebayo who is the Deputy Director Public Prosecution, said the convict committed the offence on July, 18, 2021 at about 9:30 pm at Ori- Apata community, Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.

Adebayo explained that Malomo had picked the deceased, Asisat Akande who was a sex worker, from a bar at the Panseke area to his house for “sexual pleasure”.

“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded for N10,000 which was their agreement but Malomo refused to give her the the complete money saying he had N8,000,” Adebayo told the court.

“The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased which made the convict bring out a knife from his pocket and stabbed her on the neck.

“The stab resulted to the instant death of the deceased,” the prosecutor said, adding that the offence contravened the provisions of section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code, laws of Ogun 2006.

While delivering his judgment, Justice O. Ogunfowora held that the prosecutor proved his case beyond reasonable doubt that Malomo was guilty of the offence as charged.

The judge held that the evidence presented by the prosecutor was not controverted, hence, the conviction and sentencing to death of Malomo by hanging.

“You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you,” the judge said, while disregarding Malomo’s not guilty to the one-count charge of murder.
