The Government of Ghana has assumed operational control of the Damang Mine following the rejection of a lease renewal application by Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of South Africa’s Gold Fields Limited.
The 30-year mining lease, which expires on April 18, 2025, will not be extended.
A statement from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources described the move as a strategic step in Ghana’s economic reset, aimed at ensuring the country’s gold resources benefit its citizens and contribute to sustainable national prosperity.
The government emphasized that the decision is backed by solid empirical evidence and reassured stakeholders that operations will continue without disruption.
The statement further guaranteed the protection of over 1,300 jobs, the honoring of valid service contracts, and full compliance with legal and fiscal obligations.
The Damang Mine, located in the Western Region, has been one of the country’s leading gold-producing sites under the management of Gold Fields.
