Ghana’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Botchwey, has officially assumed office as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, making history as the first African woman to hold this position.
In a “thank you” post on X, the Ghanaian diplomat reaffirmed her dedication to her new responsibilities, pledging to serve with humility and utmost commitment.
She was appointed by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their biennial meeting in Apia, Samoa, in 2024.
Ms. Botchwey brings over 20 years of leadership experience in diplomacy, international relations, governance, and public service.
Previously, she served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration from January 2017 to January 2024 and was also a member of Ghana’s National Security Council.
