Ghana’s President Mahama Dismisses Chief of Defense Staff and Senior Military Leaders

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, Ghana’s Chief of Defense Staff, along with several other top military officials.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s spokesperson, expressed appreciation for the outgoing service chiefs and acknowledged their contributions to the nation’s security.

As part of efforts to restructure the military leadership, President Mahama met with the departing officers at the Flagstaff House on Monday.

He thanked them for their service and assured them that their expertise would continue to be valued as Ghana moves forward.

The Presidency also announced the appointment of five senior officers as Acting Service Chiefs. These appointments, pending consultation with the Council of State, will take effect on March 24, 2025.

The new acting service chiefs are:
Brigadier General William Agyapong – Acting Chief of the Defense Staff

Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff

Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff

Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff

Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff
