Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has granted scholarships to the children of a staunch loyalist of his, Prince Offiong Effiwatt, who died on 25 December 2023.

The Governor announced the scholarship award during a surprise condolence visit to the family home of the deceased in Bay Side, Calabar South on Tuesday, 6 February 2024.

Speaking with the wife, children and parents of the late Offiong, Governor Otu said the deceased was a friend and staunch loyalist of many years, and dying at a relatively young age was saddening and a great loss to his family, community and state in general.

“This death, like every other one, especially for someone relatively young is saddening. While death is inevitable, and all of us will sooner or later go the way of all mortals, Offiong was a young man who was contributing very much to his community.

“I am here today to assure his wife, Jumoke, the children and the family that Offiong will be sorely missed and have undertaken to place the children on scholarship,” the Governor said.

“May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
