Gov Otu to establish University of Education and Entrepreneurship

Governor Bassey Otu has proposed the establishment of the Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship.

The University, CONVERSEER learned will be situated in Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

This was disclosed by the Governor as one of the 8 resolutions made during the 5th Cross River State Executive Council (EXCO) Meeting of 2024 held on Friday, 7th June 2024, at the Executive Council Temporary Chambers, State Council of Chiefs Chambers, Calabar.

The University of Education and Entrepreneurship will be located in the already existing Cross River State College of Education, Awi, which will be upgraded.

The 8 resolutions made during the EXCO meeting presided over by Governor Otu are:

1. The adoption of an Executive Bill for the establishment of The Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship, at Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area. With this establishment, the Status of the Cross River State College of Education, Awi, Akamkpa, will be upgraded to produce high-level entrepreneurs to meet current realities.

2. EXCO also approved the revised scope of work and the renovation of the State Library Complex, Calabar.

3. EXCO further approved the acceptance of AMCON’s Offer to settle outstanding indebtedness for TINAPA Business Resort; thus restoring it as an ASSET fully owned by the State.

4. The MEMO by the Commissioner for Water Resources for the Cross River State Urban Water Rehabilitation Project also received EXCO’s Approval which will further expand Portable water supply across the State.

5. Other EXCO Resolutions include:
Approval of a Strategic Collaboration between Universities and State MDAs to promote local fabrication of Basic Necessities in Agriculture, Educational Materials, Health Care, Water and Sanitation, amongst others would also generate employment.

6. Cross River State, being the only State qualified from the South-South Zone of the Country to benefit from the Special AGRO-INDUSTRIAL PROCESSING ZONES PROGRAMME in the Country, EXCO approved the release of Counterpart FUND to enhance seamless implementation of the Programme as well as the procurement of Four (4 Nos) TOYOTA HILUX TRUCKS to facilitate the operations of the Programme in the State.

7. Approved the Appraisal for Project preparation and other Sponsorship details to guarantee and secure the AFREXIM BANK’s $3.5 Million deal for the State.

8. EXCO further approved the Collateral Funding Facility from UBA for the Cross River State Water Rehabilitation Project.

A statement by Hon. Erasmus Ekpang, Commissioner for Information, also stated that the EXCO members unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Otu on his leadership and commitment to reshape the State in line with his People’s First Mantra.
