Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has been named Barnsley Player of the Month for January, earning recognition for his standout performances despite the club’s mixed results.
Nwakali’s impressive form follows his December Goal of the Month award, which he won for his stunning long-range strike in a thrilling victory over Exeter. While Barnsley started January on a high with two consecutive wins, they suffered three straight defeats to Bristol Rovers, Stevenage, and Wycombe, slipping down the League One table and extending their winless streak into February.
Despite their recent slump, Barnsley remain just six points off the final playoff spot, currently held by Huddersfield. With the Championship still within reach, the club will be counting on Nwakali to help spark a turnaround.

Grateful for the recognition, Nwakali thanked the fans and promised more outstanding performances in the months ahead.
“All thanks to God and to all the fans who voted me as the player of the month (January). More good things to come.”
This latest accolade comes just weeks after the 26-year-old claimed Barnsley’s December Goal of the Month for his stunning long-range strike in a dramatic comeback win against Exeter.
Nwakali,26, has racked up 13 appearances with 1 goal for Barnsley in League one which is the third tier of English football.
Barnsley will aim to bounce back when they take on Huddersfield on Saturday, looking to break their winless run and keep their promotion hopes alive.
