Lagos Assembly Enhances Security Measures in Anticipation of Plenary Session

Lagos Assembly Enhances Security Measures in Anticipation of Plenary Session

The Lagos State House of Assembly has implemented stricter security measures, requiring all officials to present valid identity cards to access the premises. This directive, aimed at ensuring better control and safety, follows the controversial impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

On Monday, January 27, Channels Television reported a calm atmosphere at the Assembly complex as plenary resumed. A notice addressed to staff, signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, stated: “Regarding management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises.”

Ottun further emphasized that access would be strictly denied to anyone without proper identification. He also noted that the Lagos State Police Command has assured its commitment to maintaining order, regardless of ongoing events at the Assembly.

This development comes two days after Obasa publicly declared that he remains the speaker until due process is fully adhered to. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by a majority of House members amid allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. His position was subsequently taken over by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

Today marks the third plenary session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal. The former speaker has not attended the last two sittings, and his absence continues to draw attention as the House resumes legislative activities under new leadership.
