The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a report alleging an alarming surge in crime rates in Lagos, calling it inaccurate and outdated.
The report, published on Monday by a national daily with the headline “Concerns as Lagos State grapples with high crime rate despite Closed Circuit Television cameras”, drew a sharp rebuttal from the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
In a statement, Hundeyin rejected the publication, labeling it “false” and lacking factual backing. He argued that, contrary to the claims, Lagos remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, with crime rates steadily declining.
CSP Hundeyin highlighted the state’s safety record during the 2024 festive season, emphasizing Lagos’s status as a hub for Nigerians and international visitors.
“Over 500,000 people entered Lagos in December 2024 alone, with 90% of them remaining in the state,” he said. “Despite this significant influx, near-zero crime was recorded during the period.”
This accomplishment, he noted, is a testament to the robust security measures implemented by the state government and the police command.
Addressing concerns about the efficacy of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed across Lagos, Hundeyin pointed out that the surveillance systems have been instrumental in combating crime.
“CCTV cameras have significantly aided in the identification and arrest of numerous criminal suspects,” he stated, highlighting the technological advancements in the state’s security apparatus.
The spokesperson further noted that Lagos’s recognition as the safest state in Nigeria earlier in the year was no fluke, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of the police, state government, and residents.
Hundeyin expressed confidence that Lagos’s security framework is solid and continues to evolve to meet the state’s growing population and urban challenges.
The Lagos police command urged media outlets to verify their information before publication, warning against sensationalism that could mislead the public and undermine the state’s image.
While acknowledging that no society is crime-free, Hundeyin maintained that Lagos is making notable progress in ensuring safety and security for all its residents and visitors.
“Lagos is not just a city; it’s a beacon of safety and opportunity,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring that it remains that way.”
