Landon Emenalo, son of Nigerian football legend, secures his first professional contract with Chelsea

Landon Emenalo, the son of former Nigerian international Mike Emenalo, has officially signed his first professional contract with Chelsea FC.

Michael Emenalo, a name synonymous with Nigerian football, made notable contributions and was capped 14 times for the Super Eagles notably during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

After retiring from playing, he continued his association with football, serving as Chelsea’s technical director from 2011 to 2017.

During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the Chelsea success, managing transfers and player development that helped shape the club’s future.

He was one of the key figures during the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea that one Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA cup, league cup and Europa league.

Landon Emenalo followed in his father’s footsteps, joining Chelsea’s youth setup at just eight years old, after spending some time at Monaco. He later returned to Chelsea at 13, training at their Cobham facility.

During the 2023/24 season, Landon made his debut for the Under-21s, playing a key role in a 4-1 victory over Colchester United in the Premier League Cup.

This season, he’s been a regular for Chelsea Under-18s, starting in the FA Youth Cup victories over Leicester City and Merstham, and participating in the Under-17 Premier League Cup.

Landon’s international future is now a topic of keen interest, as he is eligible to represent three countries.

Through his father, he qualifies to play for Nigeria, which the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may seek to capitalize on for the Golden Eaglets or the Flying Eagles. Additionally, being born in England, Landon is eligible to represent the English national team.

In addition to his club commitments, Emenalo jr has already represented the USA at Under-17 level and appeared for England’s Under-17s during international breaks in October and November, making his international career a fascinating development to watch.
