Line 4 Tunnel Boring Machine Expected to Reach Evangelismos by Year-End

Construction of the Athens Metro Line 4 is moving along at a fast pace, authorities said, with the tunnel boring machine (TBM) that started on Katehaki Avenue expected to reach the station of Evangelismos (Line 3) at the end of 2025.

Nearly half of the section is completed, or nearly 3 kilometers. Some 10 meters of a tunnel are drilled per day and the TBM stops at every new station for a few days’ maintenance. A second TBM is expected to reach Evangelismos station at the end of 2026.

Currently it is in the Galatsi neighborhood of Athens, having completed nearly 800 meters of the corresponding tunnel. The construction of Line 4 is the largest public works project being implemented currently in Greece, and is budgeted at 1.5 billion euros.

It will add 15 underground stations to the Athens metro system: Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Courts (Dikastiria), Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kessariani, Panepistimioupoli, Ilissia, Zografou and Goudi. It will cover nearly 13 km and its contractual timetable is eight years from the signing of the concession.
