The Malian transitional government has officially launched the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR-1) program, aiming to integrate 3,000 former combatants into the national armed forces.
The initiative targets armed groups allied with the military, as part of efforts to strengthen security and stability.
However, former rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) are excluded from the program, with the government labeling them as terrorists.
Regional security experts warn that, while the DDR-1 program is seen as a step toward consolidating control, however, excluding key rebel factions could fuel further instability in northern Mali.
They stress that, the program’s success will depend on how effectively it balances security concerns with national reconciliation efforts.
