NCC Approves Disconnection of Exchange Telecoms from MTN Network

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Ltd. from MTN Nigeria’s network due to unresolved interconnect charges.

The regulatory body disclosed this in a public notice issued on Friday by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr Reuben Muoka, at the commission’s office.

Reason for Disconnection

Exchange Telecommunications, a local and international interconnect carrier, was accused of failing to settle interconnect charges owed to MTN Nigeria.

The NCC stated that despite being notified of the issue and given the opportunity to provide an explanation, Exchange Telecommunications failed to offer sufficient justification for the non-payment.

Legal Basis for Action

The NCC’s decision aligns with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission hereby notifies the public that approval has been granted for the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Ltd. (Exchange) from MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd. (MTN) as a result of non-settlement of interconnect charges,” the statement read.

Implementation of Disconnection

MTN has been directed to cease passing voice and data traffic through Exchange Telecommunications within five days of the notice. The telecom giant will instead utilise alternative channels for interconnecting with other network service providers. The disconnection will remain in effect until otherwise determined by the commission.

This development underscores the NCC’s commitment to ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and financial obligations within Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
