Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) could receive a combined $13.9 million (approximately ₦21.64 billion) in prize money if the Home-Based Super Eagles and the senior Super Eagles triumph in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2025 African Nations Cup (AFCON), respectively.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently announced a significant increase in prize money for both tournaments. The CHAN 2024 winners will now earn $3.5 million, reflecting a 75% boost, while the AFCON 2025 champions will receive $10.4 million following a 32% increase.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe highlighted the importance of these tournaments in developing African football. Speaking on the prize adjustments, he said: “The CHAN is an important competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players. It contributes significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF competitions.”

Motsepe added that the tournaments form part of CAF’s strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global stakeholders.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host CHAN 2024, scheduled from February 1 to February 28, 2025. Nigeria is among the 17 already qualified nations; two additional teams are set to join after the final qualifiers.

If the Home-Based Super Eagles secure the CHAN title and the senior Super Eagles clinch the AFCON championship, it would mark a significant financial windfall for the NFF. Such earnings could help bolster Nigerian football, particularly in player development, infrastructure, and administrative support.

With both tournaments offering heightened opportunities for African teams to showcase their talent, all eyes are now on the Super Eagles and their preparations for these prestigious events.
