Nigeria Aims to Adopt Egypt’s Power Sector Model

The Nigerian government has turned to Egypt for guidance on electricity generation and transmission, describing the North African nation as a model in energy infrastructure.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this during a meeting in Abuja with the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad.

The discussions centered on deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in renewable energy expansion and rural electrification.

A statement released by Adelabu’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, on Sunday highlighted the significance of the engagement, underscoring Egypt’s achievements in the power sector as an inspiration for Nigeria’s efforts to stabilize and modernize its electricity supply.

Commending Egypt’s success in energy transformation, Adelabu expressed Nigeria’s keen interest in leveraging Egypt’s expertise to improve its own power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. He linked Egypt’s energy progress to previous collaborations with Siemens, a model Nigeria is eager to replicate.

“Egypt has made remarkable strides in energy transformation, and we are eager to collaborate and learn from your expertise. Our goal is to ensure reliable, stable, and affordable energy access for all Nigerians,” Adelabu stated.

Beyond large-scale power projects, the minister reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to expanding electricity access to rural communities, acknowledging the economic challenges of extending the national grid to remote areas.

“Many rural areas cannot be connected to the grid due to economic constraints, but we cannot neglect them,” he said. “Through our renewable energy program, we are bridging this gap. We have secured significant investments, including $750 million from the World Bank’s DARES project and an additional $190 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency to support this initiative.”

Adelabu emphasized Nigeria’s vast renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric resources, and reiterated the government’s determination to harness these for sustainable development.

In response, Ambassador Fouad welcomed Nigeria’s interest in collaboration, particularly in addressing the country’s longstanding electricity challenges. He expressed Egypt’s willingness to share its expertise, particularly in bridging Nigeria’s metering gap and expanding access to reliable power.

“Nigeria and Egypt have much in common, and there is immense potential for collaboration in the energy sector. We are committed to working together to achieve sustainable energy solutions for both countries,” Fouad said.
