Nigeria Labour Congress Warns of Strike Amid Rivers State Emergency Declaration

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to take decisive action following the federal government’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Southern Nigeria.

The union fears the decision could disrupt national economic activities if the proclamation is not reversed within a reasonable timeframe.

In a joint statement, Rivers State NLC Chairperson Alex Agwanwor, Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairperson Ikechukwu Onyefuru, and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) Chairperson Chuku Emecheta strongly condemned the government’s action.

Organized Labour described the suspension of the elected governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and House of Assembly members as premature and baseless.

Citing concerns about legality, economic impact, and broader consequences, the union decried the hardship faced by local government workers, many of whom have yet to receive their salaries.

The NLC insists that the state of emergency must be reversed to uphold Nigeria’s democratic integrity and prevent further economic instability.
