The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning of a nationwide protest if the government proceeds with its proposed electricity tariff hike.
The decision was made during a meeting of the NLC National Executive Council in Yola, Adamawa State, where the congress also inaugurated its Compressed Natural Gas-powered Mass Transit Buses for the North East Zone and discussed the economic challenges facing Nigerian workers.
The statement condemned the severe hardship that would be imposed on citizens, accusing the ruling elites of exacerbating the misery of the Nigerian people through frequent tariff hikes, increased taxation, and relentless economic hardship.
The National Executive Council resolved that “any attempt to impose additional electricity tariffs would be met with massive resistance,” and directed the National Administrative Council to begin mobilising protests immediately, warning the government not to test the patience of Nigerians.
The union also expressed concerns over the recent 35% increase in telecommunications tariffs, labelling it as an exploitative move designed to force Nigerians to pay more without any corresponding improvement in service quality.
