Nursing must remain beacon of hope – Gov’s aide tells students

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Mr Coco-Bassey Esu, has charged student nurses and midwives to uphold the noble values of the profession and ensure it remains a beacon of hope and healing for future generations.

Mr Esu made the call during the maiden edition of the National Association of Nigeria Student Nurses and Midwives (NANSNM) South South Quiz and Awards event held last week in Calabar.

The event, which drew stakeholders from across the healthcare sector, patrons of the association, and student representatives from the South South geopolitical zone, was aimed at promoting nursing excellence and empowering the next generation of nursing professionals.

In his address, Mr Esu reiterated the vital role of nurses and midwives in shaping Nigeria’s healthcare landscape, urging students to pursue excellence, contribute meaningfully to the growth of the profession, and seek leadership roles to drive solutions to health-related challenges.

He further stressed the importance of sustained investment in nursing education, practice, and research as key pillars to enhance quality care, foster innovation, and strengthen leadership within the sector.

While acknowledging the contributions of pioneering nurses and midwives, Mr Esu applauded the continued dedication of the profession to the wellbeing of society.

In her welcome remarks, the Zonal President of NANSNM, Comrade Anene Treasure Adaobi, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for students’ rights and promoting their welfare across Nigeria.

She encouraged participants to draw inspiration from the gathering and continue to celebrate excellence in the profession.

The event also served as a platform to reward academic excellence, innovation, and outstanding contributions in nursing and midwifery education.

Participants who distinguished themselves in various categories were recognised and celebrated, with the aim of fostering healthy competition and collaboration among students.

Described by attendees as a landmark occasion, the event marked a significant milestone in strengthening the voice of nursing students and positioning them for future leadership in the healthcare system.
