A devastating tanker explosion on the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State on Friday has sparked concerns about Nigeria’s road infrastructure. The incident, which claimed over 60 lives, was caused by a collision between a tanker conveying 33,000 litres of petrol and a truck loaded with fertilizer.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Federal Government to prioritize improving existing road infrastructure over building new ones.
In a post on X on Friday, Obi stated that the deplorable condition of Nigeria’s roads is responsible for a greater percentage of road accidents.
“The tragic collision is a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need to prioritize the reconstruction of existing road infrastructure across the country, improve road safety, and regulate the transportation of hazardous materials,” Obi wrote.

He emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of innocent lives, citing his recent visit to Suleja, where over 100 people were burnt in a similar tragedy. Obi also shared his experience navigating “dangerous, death-trap roads” during a trip to Kafanchan, highlighting the urgent need to improve existing road infrastructure.
Obi extended his condolences to the victims’ families and urged the government and citizens to unite in building safer roads. “Through collective responsibility and unwavering commitment, we can prevent further senseless tragedies and work toward building a safer, more secure nation for everyone,” he said.
Notably, the Federal Government has released significant funds for road construction and repairs in the past, including N650bn in 2019. However, the focus has often been on building new roads rather than improving existing ones. Obi’s call for prioritizing road repairs may spark a necessary conversation about Nigeria’s infrastructure development.
