President Mahama Directs Government Officials to Declare Assets by March 31

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has directed all government appointees to declare their assets by March 31, 2025, or face removal from office. Speaking at Jubilee House on February 18, 2025, after submitting his own asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General, Mahama emphasized his administration’s zero tolerance for non-compliance. He noted that many public officials may be unaware of their legal obligation to declare assets and urged the Auditor-General to remind them of their responsibilities under Article 286(1) of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification). These laws require public officials to declare assets upon assuming office, every four years, and at the end of their tenure. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the March 31 deadline, stressing that appointees had been given sufficient time to comply. Ghana’s asset declaration system has faced criticism for lacking transparency. President Mahama acknowledged these concerns and called for reforms, including making asset declarations public to prevent the accumulation of unexplained wealth.
