Romeo and Juliet Star Olivia Hussey Dies at 73

London, England – Olivia Hussey, the actress celebrated for her iconic portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, passed away on Friday at the age of 73.

Her family confirmed the news via Instagram, describing her as a “remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”

Hussey was born on 17 April 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary. She moved to London at the age of seven and trained at the Italia Conti drama school.

At just 15, she was cast as Juliet, starring opposite Leonard Whiting in the Oscar-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year,” securing her a place in cinematic history.

Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey had a varied career. She starred in the 1974 slasher classic Black Christmas and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

In 2023, Hussey and her co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against the studio behind Romeo and Juliet, alleging child abuse over a controversial nude scene in the film.

Although the case was dismissed, Hussey defended the scene in earlier interviews, emphasizing their professionalism and mutual support during filming.

Hussey is survived by her husband, musician David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Her enduring legacy as Juliet and her contributions to film and television remain celebrated worldwide.
