Authorities in Senegal have arrested the mayor of Dionewar, Lansana Sarr, for his alleged involvement in a migrant trafficking network facilitating illegal journeys to Spain.
During interrogation, Sarr reportedly admitted to receiving two million CFA francs from an escort linked to the smuggling operation. However, he claimed the money was meant for legal defense in case of a failed crossing.
Investigators, citing call records and witness statements, suspect otherwise, alleging that the funds were intended to bribe officials to allow two makeshift boats to depart.
Sarr, who also holds a managerial position at the post office, faces charges of criminal conspiracy in aggravated circumstances. Alongside him, other suspects – including a woman who allegedly received five million CFA francs – will be presented before the Judicial and Financial Pool (PJF) for prosecution.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns over Senegal’s role in mass migrant departures to the Canary Islands. Interior Minister Jean Baptiste Tine disclosed that between January and October 2024, over 34,000 migrants left Senegal on 502 boats, with only 64 reaching their destination.
Reacting to the case, Amnesty International Senegal’s executive director, Seydi Gassama, urged stricter penalties for traffickers.
