An iconic figure of Greek soccer, goalkeeper Takis Oikonomopoulos, has passed away at the age of 81. He made history wearing the jerseys of Panathinaikos and the Greek national team.
A few days ago, he had been admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke and was being treated in intensive care.
Takis Oikonomopoulos, one of the greatest goalkeepers in Greek soccer history, was closely linked to Panathinaikos’ historic journey to the 1971 European Cup final. Wearing the green jersey, he won titles and became a beloved figure among the club’s supporters.
His passing comes just days after the loss of another Panathinaikos legend, the “General” Mimis Domazos, who led that historic Wembley team.
