Washington, D.C. — Despite recent bomb threat emails originating from Russian email domains, U.S. officials say there’s no evidence yet that Russian nationals are behind the Tuesday 32 bomb threats.
Jen Easterly, director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), addressed the issue Tuesday night, emphasising that investigators still have not identified those responsible.
The emails, sent to several states, prompted heightened security concerns, especially given their timing during ongoing elections.
Easterly clarified that while the origin of the threats can be traced back to Russian email services, this doesn’t conclusively link them to individuals in Russia.
“We’re still investigating,” Easterly said. “It’s crucial not to jump to conclusions based solely on email domain origin.”
The FBI weighed in earlier, labeling the threats noncredible. Reports indicate that states including Georgia received the emails, which were reviewed by federal officials who quickly determined they did not pose a real danger.
Election officials remained on alert, however. Easterly reported “minor disruptive activity throughout the day” but added that security teams had planned for such challenges.
CISA has continued to work with local and state authorities to ensure election processes were unaffected by the threats.
“At this time, we’ve seen no evidence of malicious activity impacting the integrity of election infrastructure,” Easterly reassured voters.
She added that the bomb threats did not impact any state’s ability to conduct voting. The incident highlights ongoing cybersecurity challenges surrounding election security, with officials emphasising the importance of thorough investigations before drawing international conclusions.
The agency and the FBI continue to monitor the situation and are working with state election officials to ensure any emerging security threats are quickly addressed.
