US Warship Involved in Collision; Investigation Launched

The United States Navy announced on Thursday that an investigation was underway after the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier was “involved in a collision” with a merchant vessel in the Mediterranean Sea.

In a Thursday press release, the U.S. Sixth Fleet Public Affairs confirmed that the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, was “involved in a collision” with the Besiktas-M merchant vessel at roughly 11:46 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The U.S. Sixth Fleet Public Affairs noted that the incident took place while the aircraft carrier was “operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea.”

“The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as there are no reports of flooding or injuries,” the U.S. Sixth Fleet Public Affairs added. “The propulsion plants are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition.”

U.S. military officials noted that the aircraft carrier collision incident is currently under investigation and that additional details would be released to the public when more information regarding the collision is available.

According to Fox News, the USS Harry S. Truman, which operates out of Norfolk, Virginia, was deployed to the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea in September. The outlet noted that the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier had completed a port call in Souda Bay, Greece, prior to the collision with the merchant ship.

Following the aircraft carrier’s arrival at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay last week, Rear Adm. Sean Bailey, commander of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, said, “The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group remains the most adaptable and lethal presence in theater. This port visit provides the opportunity to reset and focus on maintenance for maximum readiness ahead of future operations.”

Pictures of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and the Besiktas-M merchant vessel were shared Thursday on X, formerly Twitter.
