Woman drowns in Lagos canoe mishap

A farmer identified simply as Jesuyon has lost his wife, Abosede, who drowned when the canoe conveying them to a destination capsized in the Erekiti River in Lagos State.

According to a journalist, Deji Rambo, the farmer and his 25-year-old wife left their home to do some work on their farm on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

In a bid to get to the farm, the couple boarded a canoe, which conveyed them through the Erekiti River to link to their destination.

After working on the farm, Jesuyon, his wife, and 17-year-old sister-in-law, Mary, boarded another canoe to convey them back, but the canoe capsized en route to the destination.

While in the river, the farmer swam out and, in the process, “rescued the younger sister of his wife while the wife drowned,” a source told the reporter.

Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the story on Sunday, April 6, said efforts were still ongoing to locate the body of Jesuyon’s wife.

“Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” the PPRO added.
