They decried the torture meted on the youth leader by the State Security Adviser (SSA), Major Gen. Okoi Ubi Obono (Rtd), on Friday at the Governor’s Office in Calabar.

Converseer gathered that the trouble started on Friday, 28th June 2024, when Obri was invited to Calabar by SSA Obono.

“The women are protesting n@ked because the Cross River State Security Adviser invited the youth leader of Evia Community in Biase on Friday to the Governor’s Office because some APC people are interested in the position of Youth Leader.

“The youth leader respected the directives of the SSA and honoured the invitation but upon arrival, he was rather beaten up in Governor’s Office with machetes by five boys on the directives of the State Security Adviser who forced him to resign his position as the youth leader of Evia Community before handing him over to the State Police CID with instructions that he shouldn’t be released on bail,” a source from the community told Converseer.

The source further stated that “Out of compassion, the Police insisted he should be taken to the Police Clinic for treatment before coming back to the Cell – given that his situation was critical and life-threatening – after the gruesome welcome party the SSA invited him to.”

When Converseer contacted SSA Obono on the phone on Monday, he confirmed the arrest of Obri but denied torturing him.

“I tortured him, were they here?” Obono said.

When our Reporter enquired further, the SSA said he didn’t know our Reporter, even with a formal introduction.

“I don’t know you, you’re just telling me your name, I don’t know who I am talking with. If you want to see me and make enquiry, come and see me, I want to see who I am talking with,” Obono said.

When contacted on the phone on Monday, SP Irene Ugbo, Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State Police Command, said she is not aware of the arrest of the youth leader.

“I am not aware of such information, since the order is not coming from the Commission of Police,” Ugbo said.

Converseer reports that Obri is still in detention at the time of filing this report.
