A 17-year-old student in Guinea has died just days after being imprisoned for allegedly cheating in the country’s national school-leaving examination, sparking widespread concern and debate over the treatment of students accused of examination malpractice.
The deceased, identified as Mamadou Djouma Bah, had reportedly been sentenced to one month in prison after being convicted of using a mobile phone during the national examination.
According to reports, Bah, who had been living with sickle cell disease, fell seriously ill while serving his prison sentence. His deteriorating health prompted authorities to transfer him to a hospital for medical treatment.
Despite efforts to save his life, the teenager’s condition reportedly worsened, and he later died while receiving treatment.
The incident has generated significant public reaction, with many expressing sympathy for the student’s family and raising concerns about the impact of custodial sentences on individuals living with chronic health conditions.
