Officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) promoted in 2022 are yet to receive their promotion arrears.
The promoted officers are calling on President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to pay their promotion arrears to enable them to cushion the effect of the economy laden by the current global crisis and the removal of fuel subsidy.
In a letter to the Minister of Interior, Hon. Tunji Ojo, on Wednesday, 19th June 2024, the 2022 Promoted Officers of the NIS said the issue has affected the morale of their dedication to public service as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of internal security operations.
They said their promotions were well-deserved, reflecting their commitment and competence, stressing that the delay in the disbursement of their arrears undermines their financial stability and diminishes the reward for their hard work and perseverance.
The letter by the 2022 Promoted Officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, titled, “Urgent Need to Pay Arrears for Officers Promoted in 2022,” read:
“I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to draw your attention to a matter of pressing concern regarding the non-payment of arrears owed to officers who have been promoted since 2022. This issue not only affects the morale of our dedicated public servants but also has broader implications for the effectiveness and efficiency of our internal security operations.
“Firstly, it is important to recognise the critical role that these officers play in maintaining the safety and security of our borders and nation generally. They have demonstrated exceptional dedication and professionalism in their duties, often at great personal sacrifice. Their promotions were well-deserved, reflecting their commitment and competence. However, the delay in disbursing their arrears undermines their financial stability and diminishes the reward for their hard work and perseverance.
“The non-payment of these arrears can lead to significant financial strain for the affected officers. Many of them have already planned their finances based on the expected increase in their salaries, taking into account family responsibilities, educational expenses for their children, and other essential needs. The continued delay is causing undue hardship and could potentially affect their performance and morale.
“Moreover, prompt payment of these arrears is a matter of fairness and justice. Our officers have fulfilled their duties and earned their promotions through merit and dedication. It is only just that they receive the financial benefits associated with their new ranks without further delay. Ensuring timely payment would reinforce the values of fairness and equity within the service, fostering a more motivated and dedicated workforce.
“Additionally, addressing this issue promptly would enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our internal security apparatus. Officers who feel valued and fairly compensated are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and committed to their roles. This, in turn, would lead to better performance, higher morale, and an overall improvement in the quality of service provided to the Nigerian populace.
“I urge you to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that the arrears owed to officers promoted since 2022 are paid without further delay. By doing so, you would not only be alleviating the financial burdens faced by these officers but also sending a strong message that their contributions are recognised and valued.
“Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I am confident that under your leadership, the Ministry of Interior will take the necessary steps to resolve this issue promptly and fairly.”
