FIFA’s Head of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger, has hailed Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, following their 3-1 win over Switzerland.
The current holders needed two goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez to see off the Swiss.
But the game’s turning point came in the second half, after Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation.
Scaling responded with attacking substitutions with the game poised at 1-1.
Wenger has now hailed his courage and tactics.
He said: “First of all, congratulations to Argentina. To win a game like this, in these circumstances, shows not only quality but also intelligence and composure at the highest level.
“Of course, people will speak about the red card for Breel Embolo, and yes, it had an impact on the match.
“But for me, the real story is how Argentina — and especially their coach — managed the game after that moment.
“I want to give a lot of credit to Lionel Scaloni. As someone who understands coaching, who has been on the touchline for many years, I can tell you — what he did tonight is not normal. It is exceptional.
“The substitutions were absolutely brilliant. To bring on Thiago Almada and Lautaro Martínez at that stage of the game, while keeping Julián Álvarez on the pitch — that is a decision full of courage and clarity.
“It shows a deep understanding of rhythm, of balance, and of how to hurt the opponent at the right time.
“Many coaches, in that situation, would play safe. They would try to control. But Scaloni did the opposite — he went for the game, and he read it perfectly.
“That is what top-level coaching is about. It is not only about tactics on paper, it is about feeling the game, anticipating what is coming next, and making bold decisions without hesitation.
“Tonight, Argentina did not just win because of talent. They won because their coach was one step ahead.
“So again, congratulations to Argentina — and special recognition to Scaloni. This was a masterclass.”
