The Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said his immediate focus is on the 2027 general election, insisting that discussions about a possible 2031 presidential ambition are premature.
Speaking on Channels TVPolitics Today, Kwankwaso said he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are concentrating on implementing their plans for the 2027 elections while also developing long-term strategies for Nigeria.
He expressed satisfaction with his working relationship with Obi, describing it as collaborative and driven by a shared vision for the country.
“I am so happy that today I am working together with His Excellency Peter Obi, and we are comparing notes. We are working together. We are working as a team. We are happy with what we are doing,” he said.
Responding to a question about whether he intends to contest the presidency in 2031, Kwankwaso said the priority remains the 2027 election, noting that future political decisions would depend on prevailing circumstances.
“We are praying that all of us should see 2027 and, of course, 2031. We will look at the circumstances and see what can be done, but by the grace of God, I believe our party (NDC), and of course my humble self and His Excellency Peter Obi, have a short-term plan which we are executing now,” he said.
He added, “Of course, we also have our medium and long-term plans for the country. That is what we are working on now.”
Kwankwaso’s remarks come amid growing political discussions over the NDC’s strategy ahead of the 2027 elections and speculation about the party’s future leadership beyond the next electoral cycle.
