2027: Kwankwaso, Dickson rally support for NDC amid legal setback

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reaffirmed the party’s determination to build a stronger political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections following a strategic meeting with the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson.

Kwankwaso disclosed the meeting in a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday, revealing that he visited Dickson at his Abuja residence as part of a series of consultations designed to strengthen the cohesion and electoral readiness of the newly established political party.

He wrote, “Today, I paid a courtesy visit to the National Leader of our party, the NDC, His Excellency Seriake Dickson at his residence in Abuja.

“The engagement forms part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the party’s unity, resilience, and strategic readiness as we prepare for the 2027 general elections.”

The former presidential candidate also maintained that the party remained committed to democratic values and expressed confidence that the judiciary would ultimately resolve its ongoing legal challenges.

According to him, “As true democrats, we remain committed to the rule of law and have absolute confidence in the judicial process. No temporary setback can weaken the spirit of a movement built on hope, justice, equity, and the collective aspirations of the Nigerian people.”

Calling for calm among party faithful, Kwankwaso urged members, supporters and other Nigerians to remain focused on the party’s long-term objectives despite recent developments.

He said, “I urge all party members, supporters, and well-meaning Nigerians to stay calm, resolute, and focused on our shared mission. Together, we will rise above every challenge.

“Nigeria will be OK.”

Dickson also confirmed the meeting in a separate post on his official Facebook page, describing the discussion as productive and centred on the future of the party.

According to him, the two leaders “discussed issues of mutual interest concerning our party” and reiterated their commitment to preserving Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.

The former Bayelsa State governor further stated, “We reaffirmed our resolve to stand together in the fight for multi-party democracy, and I briefed him on the measures the party is taking to correct and redress the distractions occasioned by the anomalous ruling of the Federal High Court. We are on course.”

The meeting comes just days after the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, nullified its earlier judgment delivered on December 10, 2025, which had directed the electoral commission to register the NDC as a political party.

In its latest ruling in Suit No. FHC/LKJ/CS/49/2025, Justice Isah Dashen held that the previous judgment was constitutionally flawed because all necessary parties were not heard before the decision was reached.

The court acted on an application filed by the Peace Movement Party, which argued that it had a legal interest in the case and should have been joined in the proceedings before the original judgment was delivered.

Despite the legal setback, the NDC leadership insists the party remains focused on consolidating its structures nationwide and preparing for the 2027 elections while pursuing available legal remedies.
