A lecturer of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Cross River (UNICROSS), formerly CRUTECH (Cross River University of Technology), Obubra Campus, Dr Stanley Eval Bassey, has sought counsel from the court to divorce his heavily pregnant wife, Mrs Precious Eyam Ayang.

CONVERSEER gathered that Dr Bassey approached the Customary Court of Cross River State, Ikom/Olulumo District Court holden at Ikom Local Government Area of the state on 8th May 2024 for a divorce.

According to a court document with Suit No. IKODC/14/2024, Bassey is seeking divorce over threat to life, unbearable character, lack of submission, maltreatment and other claims.

The lecturer said the matter started in January this year.

“For Court Assistance to compel the defendant (Mrs Precious) for an order of customary marriage dissolution on grounds of threat to life, unbearable character, lack of submission, maltreatment and abuse dispute arose since January 2024,” the claim read.

The court noted that “If you (defendant) fail to attend the hearing of this suit or any continuation or adjournment thereof, the court may allow the plaintiff to proceed to judgment and execution.”

Both parties appeared in the court today, Friday, 10th May 2024 for the hearing as earlier slated.

The court permitted Mrs Precious who appeared in court without a family member to sit down due to her condition. Meanwhile, Dr Bassey was in court with his mother

The court asked why Bassey’s wife came without her family, she replied, “My family is not aware of what is happening.”

The court then asked Bassey if he contacted his father-in-law before coming to seek a divorce, and he said “No.”

The court requested Bassey’s father-in-law’s contact and put a call across to him which he (father-in-law) confirmed to the court that he was just hearing for the first time.

The court asked him (Bassey) to go and start from the family since his wife is heavily pregnant and then adjourned to matter to 31st May 2024.

CONVERSEER further gathered that Mr Bassey and Mrs Precious have a child who is two years old and the woman is 7 months pregnant at the time of filing this report.
