OBUBRA (CONVERSEER) – Those pushing the narrative that the girl child is not being sent to school but rather kept in the kitchen don’t know the reality of things in Nigeria.
A total of 1,588 graduates registered at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Obubra, Cross River State, on Friday, 13th June 2025.
Out of this number, 884 were females while 704 were males – with a difference of 22.7%
This was disclosed by Mrs Oyenuga Joke, the NYSC State Coordinator, during the 2025 Batch A Stream II swearing-in on Friday. She noted that the Corps Members deployed to the state are very responsible and have adapted adequately to the regimented camp life.
In recent times, Universities and Polytechnics have churned out more female graduates than males, yet some Nigerians within and on the international stage will say the country doesn’t care about the girl child education. They formulate all kinds of stories just for the western dollars/pounds/euros.
In 2025, shouldn’t we be talking about jobs for our teeming graduates?
Assuring the Corps Members of a more conducive working environment and good welfare, the state’s governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, charged them to join hands in the affairs of nation-building by contributing to the development of their host communities.
Governor Otu who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition, Barr Ijom Ukam, further admonished the Corps Members to respect the rules and regulations of the camp and embrace skills acquisition (SAED) and other lofty programmes of NYSC that would make them job creators rather than job seekers.
The oath of allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Akon Ikpeme, who was represented by the High Court Judge of Obubra, Hon. Justice Emmanuel Ubua.
On their part, the Corps Members expressed their excitement about the swearing-in ceremony and promised to make the best use of the orientation course.
