Ankara, Turkey – A terrorist attack has struck the Turkish Aerospace Industry (Tusas) facility in Kahramankazan, Ankara, resulting in fatalities and injuries, according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. The attack targeted one of Turkey’s key aerospace defence companies, leading to an intense security situation involving an explosion and gunfire.
The incident unfolded when several attackers reportedly arrived at the Tusas facility by taxi and initiated their assault at a security checkpoint. One of the attackers is said to have detonated an explosive device, killing himself in the process. The other attackers exchanged gunfire with security personnel before making their way further into the site, leading to a critical situation within the compound.
Reports from the Turkish broadcaster NTV indicate that a hostage situation has developed within the facility. Numerous ambulances were seen rushing to the scene, and the state-run Anadolu Agency confirmed that employees were being evacuated to underground bunkers for safety. Video footage aired by Turkish media shows plumes of smoke rising near the entrance of the building, about 40 kilometres outside of the capital city, amid ongoing operations by Turkish security forces.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the facility targeted plays a significant role in Turkey’s defence sector. Tusas is responsible for developing aerospace systems, including combat aircraft and drones, and has been involved in the production of prototypes such as the Turkish Kaan fighter jet.
The area surrounding the Tusas facility has been cordoned off as security forces respond to the attack. Emergency services remain on high alert, and an investigation into the perpetrators and their motives is underway.
