Abuja, Nigeria – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced today that a significant disturbance on the national grid caused a temporary power disruption across the country.
The event, which occurred at approximately 11:29 AM, was triggered by an unexpected frequency spike, with levels rising from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz. This unusual fluctuation forced the shutdown of a TCN substation as a precautionary measure, preventing further issues within the grid.
According to TCN, recovery efforts began immediately after the incident, with the Abuja axis restored within minutes, while further recovery continues across affected areas.
The disturbance comes as TCN undertakes crucial repairs and upgrades to reinforce Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Current projects include work on the 330kV transmission line along the Shiroro–Mando axis, significant upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and restoring the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV line.
These efforts follow an investigative report on prior grid collapses, which highlighted structural weaknesses and gaps within the national transmission system.
“While repairs and upgrades are in progress, some degree of instability in the system may continue until major works are completed,” TCN stated, urging the public’s patience.
In line with the report’s recommendations, TCN is implementing a combination of technical upgrades and strategic interventions to strengthen grid stability. Additional challenges, such as vandalised infrastructure, are also being addressed as part of a comprehensive effort to improve reliability.
Acknowledging the importance of stable electricity for Nigeria’s socio-economic growth, TCN reassured the public of its commitment to enhancing the long-term stability of the national grid.
