Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government will on Monday, December 23, arraign five suspected terrorists linked to the infamous terror kingpin, Bello Turji, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The suspects, arrested by security agencies, face multiple terrorism-related charges brought by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).
Initial Hearing Delay
Scheduled for arraignment on Friday, the case was adjourned after the suspects appeared without legal representation. The prosecution, led by David Kaswe from the AGF’s office, requested additional time for the suspects to secure counsel, prompting Justice Emeka Nwite to reschedule the arraignment for Monday.
Charges Filed Against Eight Defendants
An 11-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/633/2024 was filed on December 16 by M.B. Abubakar, Director of the Department of Public Prosecutions. Among the defendants are:
- Musa Kamarawa
- Abubakar Hashimu (alias Doctor)
- Bashir Abdullahi
- Samuel Chinedu
- Lucky Chukwuma
Three additional suspects, Bello Turji, Aminu Muhammad, and Sani Lawal, remain at large.
Allegations Against the Defendants
The defendants are accused of providing material support to terrorist groups led by Bello Turji and others by supplying illicit drugs, food, military and police uniforms, and building materials to camps in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna States.
- Count Four: Kamarawa and two suspects (at large) allegedly acquired a military gun truck from Libya for N28.5 million in 2021, aware it would be used by terrorist Kachalla Halilu to commit acts of terrorism.
- Count Five: Kamarawa, Hashimu, and Abdullahi allegedly provided medical care and shelter to Turji after his group attacked Tungar Kolo Village in Zamfara State in 2018.
The offences contravene Sections 8, 17, and 18 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 and carry corresponding penalties under the Act.
Next Steps
The Federal High Court will proceed with the arraignment on Monday, and the prosecution is expected to push for a robust trial against the accused. Meanwhile, the security agencies are intensifying efforts to apprehend the three defendants still at large.
This case underscores the FG’s commitment to curbing terrorism by pursuing not just kingpins but also their collaborators.
