Another Auto Crash Claims 5 Lives, Injures 11 Along Calabar-Itu Road

Another auto crash has claimed the lives of five persons and injured 11 along the Calabar-Itu road.

CONVERSEER gathered that the crash which happened on Saturday at Ayadehe, Akwa Ibom section of the road was between a Nissan Caravan with registration number GWB-532XY and a Heavy Duty Truck without a registration number.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, Corps Commander Matthew Olonisaye, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Akwa Ibom Command attributed the auto crash to overspeeding.

Olonisaye who disclosed this via a statement signed by Paul James, Public Enlightenment Officer of the command, also emphasised that adherence to safety regulations could have prevented the tragic outcome.

“The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Saturday, 2 December 2023, along the Calabar-Itu Road by Ayadehe. Out of the 16 occupants involved (11 males and five females), three females and two males were confirmed dead, while the remaining 11 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries.

“Upon receiving the report, FRSC operatives swiftly responded, attending to the injured and transporting them to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention. The deceased victims were also moved to the morgue.

“The sector commander cautioned road users, especially motorists, against speeding, wrong-way driving, and indiscriminate parking.

“He emphasised the importance of safety consciousness among drivers and advised passengers to report any observed deviance from road safety guidelines.

“The sector commander extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured individuals a speedy recovery,” the statement read.

CONVERSEER reports that this is the second incident in less than two months along the same road, with the first also resulting in the death of some people.
