Syria Declares Christmas Holidays Amid Protests Over Oppression of Christians

Damascus, Syria – Authorities in Syria have declared December 25 and 26 official holidays for state employees to coincide with Catholic Christmas celebrations. But essential government services will continue.

The decision follows peaceful protests in Damascus and nearby Christian neighbourhoods over the oppression of Christians in Syria.

The protests were sparked by the burning of a Christmas tree in Suqaylabiyah, a Christian-majority town in Hama, by foreign mercenaries.

Local authorities have arrested the perpetrators and promised to punish them.
