Look, I respect Elon and Vivek and look forward to their DOGE-cutting government by a lot, but let’s be real here. The following are all American software engineers, love them or hate them, they are significant in their respective fields.
They all have made major contributions. So if you tell me that these are all we have, I would argue you aren’t looking then because you implicitly believe the best aren’t American. You would be biased.
Statistically speaking, we develop incredible minds here but have been brainwashed to believe they don’t exist in America. So here is a short list:
1. Bill Gates – Co-founder of Microsoft, instrumental in developing and popularizing the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office suite.
2. Linus Torvalds – Although born in Finland, he became an American citizen. He’s renowned for creating the Linux kernel, which forms the basis for numerous operating systems.
3. Grace Hopper – One of the first programmers on the Harvard Mark I computer, she developed the first compiler for a programming language and was a key figure in the development of COBOL.
4. Ken Thompson – Co-creator of the Unix operating system and the B programming language, which led to the development of C. He also contributed to Plan 9 and Inferno operating systems.
5. Dennis Ritchie – Co-developer of the Unix operating system and the C programming language, which has been foundational for modern computing.
6. James Gosling – Known as the father of Java, he designed the language at Sun Microsystems, which has had a profound impact on software development.
7. Alan Kay – Influential in object-oriented programming, he contributed to the development of Smalltalk, which influenced many modern programming languages and environments.
8. Brendan Eich – Inventor of JavaScript, a key language for web development, and co-founder of Mozilla, where he led the development of Firefox.
9. Guido van Rossum – Creator of Python, now an American citizen, his language has become one of the most popular in education, science, and industry.
10. John McCarthy – Developer of Lisp, one of the oldest high-level programming languages still in use, and a pioneer in artificial intelligence.
11. David Heinemeier Hansson – Creator of Ruby on Rails, although originally from Denmark, he’s now based in the U.S., and his framework revolutionized web application development.
12. Kent Beck – One of the founders of the Agile movement and developer of extreme programming (XP), also known for his contributions to the development of JUnit and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
