Nigeria Police checkpoint during a communal clash at Obubra in Cross River State. 1st October 2023.

Calabar, Nigeria – No fewer than six people were killed over the weekend in renewed inter-boundary clashes between the Isu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area (LGA) of Abia State and the Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa Eburutu community in Odukpani LGA of Cross River State.

The cause of the latest violence remained undisclosed as of Monday morning, following confirmation of casualties.

For over a decade, these neighbouring communities have experienced intermittent clashes, resulting in numerous deaths.

According to locals, this marks the second invasion of the Ukwa community in six months. In May 2024, several residents were reportedly killed in disputes over ownership of land believed to contain precious stones.

According to Daily Post, sources from Mbiabong Ukwa allege that the attack, which began on Saturday morning, was launched by suspected warlords from Isu.

Youth leader Willy Esara stated, “The invaders swooped on us on Saturday, killed two men, and critically injured ten others.”

Another source reported that the attackers ambushed villagers heading to their farms, opening fire and killing two men—Abi Effiong Oku and Inyang Nya Ewa. One of the deceased was reportedly beheaded.

The attack has left the community in shock, with residents fleeing for safety.

Police spokesperson in Cross River, SP Irene Ugbo stated that the force had not yet been briefed but assured the public of an investigation.
