LONDON – Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft, has opened up about his divorce from ex-wife Melinda Gates, calling it “the mistake I most regret.”
In a candid interview with The Times of London published on January 25, Gates, 69, shared the emotional toll of the separation, yet expressed that he feels “more cheerful now” as he moves forward.
The Gates’ divorce, which ended their 27-year marriage, was announced in May 2021. The couple, married since 1994, share three children: Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe.
Reflecting on the breakdown of their marriage, Gates admitted that it was one of his most significant personal failures. “You would have to put that at the top of the list,” he said, describing the divorce as “miserable” for both him and Melinda for at least two years.
Despite the painful split, Gates spoke of the enduring memories and shared experiences that marked their time together. “There is a certain wonderfulness to spending your entire adult life with one person because of the memories and depth of things you have done and having kids together,” Gates said.
He also acknowledged the pivotal role Melinda played in his success, noting that she “saw me through a lot” during their time together.
The couple first met in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft, and they co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation after their marriage.
Their philanthropic efforts made the foundation one of the world’s largest and most influential charitable organisations. However, following their divorce, Melinda left the foundation, a decision that disappointed Gates, though he respected her choice.
While the divorce marked a significant personal and professional challenge, Gates emphasised their cooperative approach to co-parenting their children. “Melinda and I still see each other—we have three kids and two grandchildren, so there are family events,” he shared, noting that their children are thriving with “good values.”
Melinda has also been candid about her healing journey post-divorce, describing it as “unbelievably painful” but also emphasising the importance of privacy in her recovery. She reflected on the complexities of working with Gates after their separation, acknowledging the challenge of remaining professional despite personal turmoil.
“I had to show up and be my best,” she said, recounting moments when she would appear at work despite emotional distress.
Both Gates and Melinda appear committed to moving forward with mutual respect and care for their shared history and family.
