Embracing Remigration: We Owe Foreigners Nothing

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says his support for President Bola Tinubu’s election in 2023 was never to gain any favour in return.

El-Rufai said this during a Twitter exchange with a Nigerian man who said that President Tinubu and his allies had desperately sought El-Rufai’s support before the election and sang his praises but later dumped him after assuming office and accused him of not backing the president.

“When they were desperately seeking El-Rufai’s support, #officialABAT and his goons were everywhere singing Malam’s praises. Given their penchant for ingratitude, however, they’ve turned around to claim that Malam didn’t even support PBAT. But these testimonies say otherwise,” the X user had written.

Replying to the tweet via his X handle, El-Rufai said that he had no personal expectations from his political actions, adding that the developing events were simply a reflection of human nature.

“We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well. Thanks anyway,” he wrote.

El-Rufai was an integral member of the Northern governors in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) who, prior to the party’s primary, insisted that a Southerner must succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. President Tinubu later emerged as the party’s candidate and eventually won the election against Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

El-Rufai, who seems to have fallen out with the Tinubu’s camp, has been critical of the Tinubu administration and the APC recently. This has resulted in a constant exchange of words between the former Kaduna governor and some aides of the President on X.
