The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has condemned the killing of 16 travelers in Edo State and assured Nigerians that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The victims, identified as hunters, were reportedly attacked and killed by a mob in Uromi, Edo State, on March 28 while returning home from Rivers State to celebrate the end of Ramadan and Eid-el-Fitr with their families.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various northern groups, state governments, and lawmakers.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the CDS expressed regret over the killings.
He stressed that the tragedy could have been prevented if authorities had been properly informed to verify the victims’ identities.
The statement read: “The incident, which occurred on March 28, 2025, could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities were notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims.”
He extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the families of those who lost their lives.
The CDS called for restraint and urged citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“The CDS also urged Nigerians not to take laws into their hands but always revert to constituted authorities in matters that affect security,” it added.
Musa assured the public that the Armed Forces would work closely with the police and other security agencies to ensure that justice is served.
Additionally, the Defence Chief warned vigilante groups and hunters to register with relevant security agencies to regulate the possession of firearms.
