President John Dramani Mahama has been formally petitioned to initiate the constitutional process for the removal of Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional breaches.
The petition, submitted on April 3, 2025, by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), accuses Mr. Asiedu of committing high crimes and undermining public accountability. The group has presented what it calls solid evidence and is urging the president to act swiftly.
Key allegations against the Auditor General include defying Supreme Court directives, unlawful retention of public funds, conniving with the Audit Service Board to usurp the powers of Parliament and abuse of discretionary powers and cover-up.
ASEPA is demanding that President Mahama invoke Article 187(13) of the Constitution, which outlines the process for removing an Auditor-General, similar to the removal of a Chief Justice under Article 146.
The petition was signed by ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson, who stressed the importance of transparency and constitutional adherence.
