Amidst reports of growing cases of sea and land mishaps to commuters in the country, the Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria (JNTSCN) has called on all stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure safety remained a top priority.
Speaking while inaugurating JNTSCN Executive Committee in Cross River State, the National Executive Chairman, Amb. Taiwo Oluwadamilare Mogbojuri, highlighted the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of drivers, passengers, and communities.
He said with a robust partnership with relevant government agencies, ministries, departments, and security agencies, transport operators/unions should be able to tackle bottlenecks and threats facing both passengers and transport operators in the country.
Mogbojuri noted that the inauguration of the State Executive Committee members marked a significant milestone in the organization’s efforts to enhance transport safety across the country.
In his brief remarks, Hon. Cobham Ekpeyong, the Cross Rivers State Commissioner of Transport, who represented Governor Bassey Otu, expressed gratitude to JNTSCN for establishing its presence in Cross River State with the inauguration of its Executive Committee.
The Commissioner emphasized the State’s commitment to enhancing transport safety and pledged support for the committee’s initiatives, describing the establishment of the Committee as both timely and strategic for the State’s development.
Those inaugurated included Dr. Julius Obanghe Kijuo – Executive Chairman; Mrs. Chinelo George – Secretary; Mr. Eteng Okoi Jimmy – Finance/Treasurer and Dr. Ndoma Odey – Administrator.
Others were: Comrade Otu Okoi Ikpi – Head of Operations; Comrade Eko Monday Omini – Enforcement and Compliance, as well as Barr. Effiwatt Ntiero Offiong – Legal Adviser.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated committee members, the Chairman, Dr Kijuo, expressed gratitude to Gov Otu for the opportunity to serve.
He pledged to work in close collaboration with federal agencies, state institutions and transport unions to ensure compliance with safety regulations, curb truck and shipboard overloading, and protect government infrastructure.
“We are honored to embark on this journey with our partners and stakeholders. Your expertise and commitment to safety excellence are invaluable assets to this partnership. Together, we can create a safer and more efficient transport system for all Nigerians,” he stated.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by top government officials, Heads of Federal Agencies, security institutions, union leaders, and key stakeholders in the transport sector.
