The government of Sierra Leone has introduced an ambitious five-year strategy aimed at enhancing social inclusion and promoting unity across all sectors of society.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, outlined key pillars of the initiative, including the professionalisation of social work, the empowerment of persons with disabilities, and the reinforcement of national unity through policies promoting religious tolerance.
A central focus of the strategy is the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities. Backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), rehabilitation centres in Makeni and eastern Freetown have already undergone significant improvements.
Minister Karminty also revealed that the Indian government has granted Sierra Leone $1 million to support the expansion of these rehabilitation efforts across the country.
This funding is expected to enhance opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate more fully in the economy and society.
On the legislative front, the minister announced the submission of a new bill to Parliament that seeks to regulate the social work profession. Already approved by Cabinet, the proposed law would introduce a formal accreditation system for social workers, ensuring ethical standards and high-quality services for vulnerable populations.
This strategic plan is set to guide the Ministry of Social Welfare’s actions over the next five years, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s commitment to inclusive development.
