The Cross River State Government has warned members of the public against individuals allegedly making false promises of job placements following the ongoing investigation into the recent recruitment exercise conducted by the Local Government Service Commission.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the panel investigating the recruitment exercise said its attention had been drawn to reports of some persons collecting money from unsuspecting applicants with assurances of securing employment after the panel concludes its assignment.

The panel clarified that no individual or group had been authorised to demand or receive money from applicants in exchange for employment opportunities.

According to the statement signed by the Panel Secretary, Dr Ntunkae Mary-Theresa Ikwen, affected applicants who made payments to anyone but were allegedly defrauded have been advised to report such cases to the panel through available communication channels for possible recovery and repayment of the monies.

“The Panel hereby advises all applicants who made payments to anybody in the hope of securing job opportunities but were shortchanged, to use available communication medium to report same to the Panel for possible retrieval and repayment,” the statement read.

The panel also announced that newly employed local government workers who were unable to participate in the screening exercise at designated centres would still have an opportunity to complete the process.

It stated that the final deadline for the screening exercise is Friday, May 29, 2026, by 4pm.

The government further disclosed that a mop-up screening exercise is currently ongoing daily at the Conference Room of the Office of the Head of Service, New Secretariat Complex, Calabar, between 10am and 3pm.

Applicants and affected employees were urged to take note of the directives and comply accordingly.
